Q&A: How do I connect my sub to Catv wire?

Question by Izz: How do I connect my sub to Catv wire?
I have a catv wire behind the sheet rock connected to a wall plate. The wall plate is a single RCA. How do I connect my sub and receiver that use left and right speaker wire. I tried splicing them into RCA jacks that led to a single jack to plug to the wall plate but no sound from sub. Thx

Answer by Grumpy MacRCA plugs are for line-level signals. These are weak voltages that have to be protected by the coax which is what the RCA cables really are. These wires are NOT designed to carry watts of power.

Your subwoofer is un-powered and is essentially a motor. You use speaker wire to hook this up.

And if you try to run speaker wire in the walls - you need in-wall rated speaker wire to satisfy fire code.

If you have a real AV receiver with a subwoofer output jack that is an RCA - buy a self-powered sub and then you can use your in-wall coax.
