What is the biggest tree ever to have existed since life began millions of years ago ?

Question by gus l: What is the biggest tree ever to have existed since life began millions of years ago ?
I am not talking about woods connected together by roots where trees are an offshoot of one original tree but single trunk bult - what was the hugest ever ? I am assuming there were once much larger trees than todays sequoias .
please note I am not looking for the record of the current biggest trees !
Animals seem to have been much larger at some points in the past so I was wondering if the same was true of trees.

Answer by QuibishBy volume and mass, the largest tree is the Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum). They grow to an average height of 70–85 m (230–280 ft) and 5 – 7 m (16–23 ft) in diameter. Specimens have been recorded to be up to 94.9 m (307 ft) in height and (not the same individual) 8.98 m (29 ft) in diameter; the largest individual is the General Sherman tree, with a volume of 1,489 m3 (52,600 ft3). Although not so large in volume,
